Where It Comes From

Pickleball was created in 1965 in the United States. A few friends were trying to set up a game for their families but didn’t have the right equipment, so they improvised with what they had.

They lowered a badminton net, picked up simple wooden paddles, and started hitting a plastic ball back and forth. The rules were shaped naturally as they played.

What began as a casual summer experiment grew steadily over the decades. Today, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, expanding across North America and now into Europe, including Switzerland.

How does Pickleball Work?

Pickleball is played on a small court, about the size of a badminton court.
You play singles or doubles.
The goal is simple: win points by keeping the ball in play and forcing an error.

Games are usually played to 11 points.
You must win by two.

The Essential Pickleball Rules

  1. The serve must be underhand.
  2. The ball must bounce once on each side at the start of a rally.
  3. Players cannot volley inside the “kitchen” (the non-volley zone near the net).
  4. Only the serving team scores points.

These simple pickleball rules make the game fast, fair, and surprisingly strategic.

Why is Pickleball Growing in Switzerland?

Pickleball is accessible.
You don’t need years of training.
You don’t need extreme fitness.

Across Switzerland, more players are discovering pickleball as an after-work sport that feels social, active, and unintimidating.
